Tip Sheet: Oct. 21-27

WEDNESDAY: Indie Boy Wonder
Under the name Kleenex Girl Wonder, Graham Smith released a number of lo-fi indie-rock albums during the mid-Nineties and early Oughts before disappearing from the recording scene for six years. He returned this year with a charming new album, Ms. Equitone, which he’ll be promoting at tonight’s CMJ showcase at Union Hall. Smith opens the night’s bill, which is rounded out by Peter Peter Hughes, El May, and headliner Franklin Bruno. Doors open at 7pm. Get tickets.
Takka Takka Times Three
Local indie rockers Takka Takka rep the Northside of CMJ this week, with three shows in three days happening in North Brooklyn. On Wednesday, they’ll be playing an early evening set for the Ernest Jenning Record Co’s showcase at the Knitting Factory, alongside labelmates like lo-fi folksters Blood Warrior, featuring O’Death’s Greg Jamie, and Title Tracks, the new, uptempo project by Q and Not U’s John Davis; later that night, they’ll be playing at Noise Problem’s Union Pool CMJ party, along with Aloha’s Cale Parks. Finally, on Friday, they’ll be one of seven bands playing at an unofficial CMJ party at Glasslands, complete with three afterparty DJs and free beer at eight.
THURSDAY: Our Corner of CMJ
Everyone who’s anyone is throwing a CMJ party this week, and we’re no exception. Brooklyn Based is presenting our own full lineup of bands, food, and booze, along with internet friends Gothamist, at the Bell House Thursday from 4pm until late. Acts present for your musical delectation include veteran CMJers Robbers on High Street, Uninhabitable Mansions, a self-described “art collective and band” featuring members of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah and Au Revoir Simone, Small Black, local Pitchfork darlings who’ve just released their first EP, and the poppy Queens-based act Freelance Whales. Delicious food from the Red Hook ball field vendors, Asia Dogs, and Van Leeuwen ice cream and (free!) vodka drinks, as well as DJs, make this the perfect CMJ night out — and did we mention the whole shebang is free?

Sounds of the Streets
Thanks to the 5th Avenue Business Improvement District’s “Music on the Streets” program, Park Slope’s 5th Avenue will be transformed into an open-air concert space, featuring performances by jazz, folk, and classical musicians, among others this Thursday. The free concerts will be strategically spaced between Dean Street and 18th Street and will be held from 6:30pm to 8pm. Can’t make this evening? The music returns to the street on October 29. For more information call 718-768-0001.
FRIDAY: Lot Art
The outdoor sculpture exhibition Before the wind blows it all away opens Friday with a party from 7-10pm at 305 Grand Street (an empty lot between Roebling and Havemeyer) featuring piano music and refreshments by Tuthilltown Spirits. Hanna Liden, featured previously in the Whitney Biennial, is one of the nine artists included in the show inspired by “transformative power of art and the anarchic beauty of urban decay.”
SATURDAY: Bookstore Blowout
Fort Greene book lovers have a full day ahead of them with the opening of Greenlight Bookstore, the new neighborhood book shop at the corner of Fulton and South Portland. The morning is dedicated to tiny readers, with a ten AM storytime featuring local author Michelle Knudsen’s Library Lion, as well as lit-centric treats and prizes for the little ones. The opening bash turns grown-up at 7pm, when they break out the bubbly and give away copies of A Public Space. Fort Greene’s own Toure will read to commemorate the occasion.

SUNDAY: Second Go
Last weekend was less than ideal for flea market wanderings, weather-wise, so we rescheduled our curated corner at the Brooklyn Flea to this Sunday (and Halloween). Stop by Brooklyn Bridge Park in Dumbo for Jezebel cards, Kenspeckle shirts, Anarchy in a Jar jam, Spring Design goods, and Shootbooth snapshots.
Slow-Down Storytime
If New York seems hectic and overwhelming to us sometimes, imagine how it must seem from the point of view of a kindergartner. Today, take it slow with the children in your life at a reading of The Busiest Street in Town at WORD. Author Mara Rockliff will be coming to the Greenpoint bookstore at 12:30 pm to read her picture book about the day Agatha May Walker takes to the busiest street in her town with cookies and a Parcheesi set to bring a bit of peace and quiet to the noisy city.
Fest at the Farm
Flatbush Farm gets in the spirit of the season with an Oktoberfest celebration. From 4pm to 7pm, the restaurant will be serving bratwursts and other Bavarian foods, coupling them with beers from such brewers as Germany’s Pinkus Muller (who use organic barley malt for their brews) and Milwaukee-based Sprecher.
TUESDAY: County of Kings Cuisine
It has to be said — we have some of the best food in the world right here in Brooklyn. Tonight, get the chance to taste a number of the highlights, along with local brews and wine, at the twelfth edition of Brooklyn Eats. $125 gets you the chance to eat your way through restaurants like Buttermilk Channel, Oaxaca, and Get Fresh, as well as drinks from the Clover Club, Sixpoint, and Brooklyn Brewery.
Plan Ahead: Suds and Sounds
Party people Finger on the Pulse are soundtracking a delicious feast on Oct. 29 with Chef David Colston of Prime Meats and Brooklyn Brewery’s Garrett Oliver. The five-course meal will be paired with Brooklyn Brewery’s special and unreleased reserve beers at FTOP’s gorgeous loft. Tickets are $100 apiece, for an indulgent menu that includes seared Diver scallops and hangar steak. Space is limited and going quickly, so email to get your reservation! We also have a pair of tickets for a random reader who tells us the name of Garret’s latest Brewmaster’s Reserve beer, which he collaborated on with mixologist Dave Wondrich. Email us the name in the subject line, and we’ll pick the winner on Monday.
