Battle of the Fests
This weekend’s itinerary poses a doozy: deciding which music festival to go to.
Option 1: The 7th annual Village Voice Siren Festival on Saturday. This will likely be your last chance to hear a top-notch, all-indie lineup beneath the shadow of The Cyclone, including the legendary New York Dolls, Omaha’s Cursive, and London’s M.I.A. (whose new album we are rabidly anticipating). Plus: it’s free. Minus: Coney’s a schlep. Noon to 9pm. For directions, and a full listing of bands, visit villagevoice.com/siren/
Option 2: Heeb Magazine’s Diamond Days Festival. The decision to go up against the Siren wasn’t purposeful, but 27-year-old producer Jay Diamond, who books bands at Williamsburg venues like Trash Bar, wasn’t intimidated, either. “The Siren’s a big corporate fest that’s lost its meaning. I wanted to do something where all my friends and the bands I like could be in the same room, for a low price.” He’s not kidding: For $25, you can see nearly 50 freak folk and acid punk bands (and catch Heeb Storytelling) over the course of four days. We had just one question: why is Heeb the media sponsor of a fest that has no obvious ties to hipster Jews? Diamond explained: “They cover so much good music. It’s not all [Hasidic rapper] Matisyahu. They actually know what they’re talking about.”
Plus: The proceeds benefit the City Reliquary, the Williamsuburg civic organization and repository of city artifacts. Minus: The biggest name on the lineup is the psych folk outfit, Sunburned Hand of the Man , on Thurston Moore’s label.
Thurs.-Sun. at various Williamsburg and Greenpoint venues. More info at myspace.com/diamonddaysfest
Elsewhere in da hoods:
In Blast Wall Art, a performance piece by the rambunctious AMDaT troupe, dancers will lead audiences through Dumbo to the Commodore Barry Hand Ball Court for a video/dance installation inspired by rebellious Baghdad artists. Participation is free; meet at Bridge Park 1, 112 Jay St., 8pm tonight through Saturday. Vist amdat.org for more info.
The craziest Celebrate Brooklyn concert yet may be Granny-winning children’s band Dan Zanes and Friends, performing at the Prospect Park Bandshell this Sunday. Having kids isn’t a prerequisite to appreciate this skilled folk/roots musician (and Carroll Gardens denizen) with the unforgettable fro. 5pm, Prospect Park West at 9th St. briconline.org
On Thursday at sundown, Muppets Take Manhattan screens in Empire-Fulton Ferry State Park. It doesn’t have the same razzle dazzle as The Great Muppet Caper, but then, what does? brooklynbridgepark.org
