BKLYN DESIGNS Sneak Peak
If you’ve never made it to BKLYN DESIGNS, the annual, Brooklyn-made furnishings fair in DUMBO, this weekend’s edition is packed with small home goods and fashion accessories — perfect for design junkies and last-minute gifts for mom. A ton of free talks, about “losing the lawn,” green decor, and decorating tips for parents, round out the biggest BKLYN DESIGNS yet.
Four venues this year will feature 70 exhibitors, including 30 newcomers like Charlie Brokate of charliedoes, who applies his adorable illustrations to hand designed paper lamps (pictured); the design firm BigPrototype, which will showcase its innovative fabrications and furniture; and dVider, a one-and-a-half-year-old company that will debut new vinyl stickers for walls, floors, ceilings, windows, and their ingenious system of cloth room partitions.
And this year, the expanded cash-and-carry mart for smaller accessories, BKLYN DESIGNS+, now in the Tobacco Warehouse, is a treasure trove of great Mother’s Day gifts like the aesthetically pleasing, surreal steeping teapot, Sorapot, and Rosanne Pugliese’s gorgeous necklaces of rough-cut stones, oxidized silver and 22K gold. Not in the market for anything? There’s plenty of eye candy to behold, like the glowing, stackable TwistTogether Lamp from Glide.
Maxwell Gillingham-Ryan of Apartment Therapy, Lockhart Steele of Curbed, Jill Fehrenbacher and Abigail Doan of Inhabitat, and ReadyMade editors will all be speaking, leading tours and crafting sessions too. The full event schedule is here>>
BKLYN DESIGNS, the prelude to New York Design Week and the International Contemporary Furniture Fair, runs Friday May 9- Sunday May 11. Venues and times are online at brooklyndesigns.net.
