De Plane, De Island, De Party

“Lost” may be the most perfectly titled show on TV. Its own fans don’t totally get it, and the non-watchers don’t understand the hype. But when the fifth season premieres this Wednesday, January 21, we’ll please both camps at the most fantabulous “Lost” viewing party in NYC.
Like the densely plotted show, our Bell House party will be packed with mysteries and flashbacks — plus free gifts (see below), $1 Rum Punches courtesy of Sailor Jerry Rum, and “the world’s first recap rock band,” Previously on Lost.
Brooklynites Jeff Curtin and Adam Schatz formed the band last year as Season 4 began, and released weekly psych-pop recaps of every episode (hence their name). But don’t mistake them for a gimmick, or a band that only fans will get. Their tight-knit, seven-piece live act is like The Flaming Lips on speed, mixed with hilarious pre-show performance art (spoiler: they begin with a plane crash).
PoL takes the stage at 8pm before the premiere airs at 9. But your best bet is to show up by 7 for the $1 cocktails, a chance to win all four past seasons on DVD, and to get one of six free “survival kits.” The 4th, 8th, 15th, 16th, 23rd and 42nd guests — significant numbers on the show — will get our Brooklyn-rific totes stuffed with everything you’d need to survive a plane crash on a South Pacific island, including Saipua travel soaps, Dharma shirts by 108 Apparel, the survivalists’ classic “How to Stay Alive in the Woods” (available at BookCourt), and a CD by the stars of the evening (aside from Kate and Jack), Previously on Lost. Full details on the party below. But first, Adam Schatz, below left, explains their high concept act.

Was it “Lost” that inspired you to become the world’s first recap band? “Lost” is one of those shows where you watch it and immediately think “How can I be a part of this? What is my purpose in the ‘Lost’ empire?” For us, the answer was there all along, in our hearts. We felt it was our privilege AND duty to provide weekly recaps to get “Lost” viewers through the week.
Can you recap the past four seasons in a lyric or two?
Friends who have crashed are now lost in the sea
Secrets released without reason or rhyme
We watch and stay true, to the remaining few
though we don’t know what’s going on half of the time
You’re moving on to other topics to recap soon, like photosynthesis and a video game on the history of the Oregon Trail. What kind of source material are you going to use — Wikipedia? We tend to dive headfirst into the subject at hand. For photosynthesis we will likely begin at 4th grade science textbooks and work our way up to the 12th grade, as well as interview any willing plants.
For the Oregon Trail we will play the game repeatedly and calculate all possible gruesome outcomes.
Do you regret your band name now that you’re recapping other things? The Onion called it one of the worst band names of 2008. Being a satirical paper, I think it’s safe to say that by calling it the worst name, The Onion actually meant we have the best name of 2008, which is true. It’s the first phrase that you hear when watching an episode, and it completely embodies the idea of recap, no matter what we’re recapping. “Previously On Lost” has meaning and forces far beyond the depths of television.
You’ve been called “that rare novelty act that transcends its own self-constructed novelty.” Are there any others as good as you? I think the only novelty group to ever come close has been U2.
Will the Bell House show be the last time you recap “Lost”? Certainly not. I hope in five years we are still performing the “Tale of Season 4 and the Oceanic Six.” It’s like a slice of time that can always be revisited, and ages like a fine wine. We will also be recording and releasing a recap for the premiere of Season 5, but we don’t plan on doing every episode of Season 5. After all, we wouldn’t want to get pigeonholed…
“Lost” Season 5 Premiere Party with Previously on Lost, presented by Brooklyn Based and sponsored by Sailor Jerry Rum at the Bell House, Wednesday, January 21. PoL will take the stage at 8pm to recap Season 4 before the 9pm Season 5 premiere. Doors 7pm, $5 cover. Free leis! Bell House, 149 7th St., Gowanus, 718-643-6510.
