Festive Us
On Parade
Bushwick artists sure know how to hold a studio tour. Instead of just disseminating maps for a self-guided art walk, they’ve added acrobats, music, film and burlesque to their Open Studios and Arts Festival, running Friday through Sunday in the streets stretching from the Montrose L stop to the Myrtle JMZ stop. Catch the parade on Saturday beginning at 11 AM on McKibbin Street at McKibben Court; at 8, check out the Bushwick Cabaret at Nutroaster ( Ingraham Street at Porter). For scenes from last year’s festival, click on this slideshow of Jason Guerrero’s photos. To view the list of participating artists or to download a program and map, click here.
On Pier
Red Hook hosts its own Waterfront Arts Festival this Saturday at the Louis J. Valentino, Jr. Park & Pier (Coffey and Ferris Sts.) from 10 AM till 7, featuring live dance, a petting zoo, and kayaking courtesy the Red Hook Boaters, who supply all the gear for your free joy paddle. On Stage
The BrooklynBest Festival in Prospect Park starts Saturday night with fireworks at 8:45 PM and a screening of Close Encounters of the Third Kind at 9. Sunday from 11 to 6 see a sample of the talent lined up for this summer’s season of free concerts and festivals, like the sexy, Siouxsie-like Kudu of the JellyNYC Pool Parties in McCarren Park, and play a game of putt putt at a Brooklyn-themed mini golf course (for details click here). The truly ambitious could then walk to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, which is celebrating its blooming roses (Jazz & Roses, Sun., noon-5:30; bbg.org).
On Screen
The Brooklyn satellite of the Sundance Film Institute opens today at BAM, and the lineup looks like a Behind the Music marathon: The Great World of Sound ponders American Idol-style fame; the life of the Clash front man is examined in Joe Strummer: The Future Is Unwritten; and the L.A. punk band X gets the same scrutiny in X: The Unheard Treatment. Guitarist John Doe will perform afterward. (May 31-June 10 at BAM Rose Cinemas; bam.org).
And finally, Friday night the Brooklyn International Film Fest (www.wbff.org) opens at the Navy Yard’s Steiner Studios. The first night’s feature is (literally) Made In Brooklyn, a series of amusing shorts about wiseguys featuring a few Sopranos stars, like “Wood,” directed by Sharon Angela (Carmela’s friend Rosalie Aprile), with Vincent Curatola (Johnny Sack) and the film’s producer Luca Palanca. We have two tickets for the screening and after party, complete with DJs and complimentary drinks, to give to the first person who can guess where in Brooklyn this photo was taken. (Just hit reply with your answer.)
