Garden of Eatin’ (and Drinkin’)
The weather is finally fit for outdoor drinks, so we’ve compiled open-air spots that will suit your every mood. Garden hours and phone numbers noted only when the site (or lack thereof) doesn’t spell it out.
Rocky Sullivan’s (formerly Liberty Heights Taproom), 34 Van Dyke St, Red Hook
opens 11 am Mon-Sat and Sun at noon, closes 2 am-4 am nightly
The only rooftop bar in the city that can actually be called serene.
Flatbush Farm/Bar(n), 76 St. Marks Ave, Prospect Heights
opens 11:30 daily, closes 11 pm-12 am nightly
Inside this tree-canopied garden, you forget you’re steps from one of the busiest blocks in Brooklyn.
Spuyten Duyvil, 359 Metropolitan Ave, Williamsburg
opens 5 pm daily, closes 2-4 am nightly
A true bastion of beers, (six on tap, often one on cask, well over 100 in bottles), Spuyten Duyvil sports a huge, tree-lined backyard perfect for warm summer evenings.
Franklin Park, 618 St. John’s Pl, Crown Heights
The co-owner of Southpaw has created a classy beer oasis in an untapped hood, featuring 12 beers on draught and a full bar inside, and a tranquil, shady patio out front.
Sweet People Watching
The Pencil Factory, 142 Franklin St, 718-609-5858
Mon-Fri 3 pm-4 am, Sat-Sun, 1 pm-4 am
The Pencil Factory’s sidewalk seating offers an ideal spot for watching all manner of boozy comings and goings at this nexus of Greenpoint bars.

Red Bamboo, Chez Oscar, Sushi D, corner Adelphi and DeKalb, Fort Greene
When this corner is jam-packed with outdoor diners, you know it’s spring. For drinks only, try Red Bamboo’s shaded front patio.
Classic Cocktail
Huckleberry Bar, 588 Grand St, Williamsburg
4 pm to 4 am daily
The backyard feels like a friend’s sunny deck, if that friend served high-end cocktails (thyme infused vodka anyone?) and a seasonally inspired menu.
East River Bar, 97 S. 6th St, Williamsburg
Sun-Thurs 5 pm-3 am, Fri-Sat 5 pm-4 am
With the dulcet tones of the JMZ just overhead, East River’s backyard is a reminder of the neighborhood’s pre-condo appeal.
Total Scenes
Trout, 269 Pacific St, 718-935-1294/1295, Cobble Hill
open intermittently until May 5th
A blast until they start cranking Wilco to deafening decibels.
Union Pool, 484 Union Ave, Williamsburg, 718-609-0484
5 pm-4 am daily
Despite the spacious patio, one Yelper’s description says it all: “Boozy Petting Zoo.” Head to Macri Park (462 Union Ave, 718-599-4999) for something more low key.
Habana Outpost, 757 Fulton St, Fort Greene,
noon-midnight daily except Tues
People obviously aren’t coming here for the machine-made margaritas.
Restaurants that allow “just drinks” outside
Chez Lola, 387 Myrtle Ave, Fort Greene
open 11 am-11 pm daily
Owners Denis Costa and Charlotta Janssen have outdone themselves with their funky, bistro-on-absinthe decor.
Frankie’s 457, 457 Court St, Carroll Gardens
The bare bulbs strung across this tranquil garden create a cinematic setting for wine and cheese.
My Moon, 184 N. 10th St, Williamsburg
As one of our favorite blogs, City Dirt puts it: “The food here is good, but won’t change your life, and the wine list is hit or miss…but hardscape-wise this is arguably one of the most beautiful restaurant gardens in New York City.”
Opening Soon
Annabelle’s, 44 Beard St, Red Hook, 718-643-1500
noon to midnight daily
Neil Ganic has turned the grungy charm of Lillie’s into a sleek bar inside, and a tropical paradise outside, complete with palms, ponds, and a crab boiler. Opens May 9 or so.
Weather Up, 589 Vanderbilt Ave, Prospect Heights
Tues-Sun, 7 pm-3 am
Oysters alfresco will have to wait until the patio is built sometime in May.
Patio Lounge, 179 Fifth Ave, Park Slope
This stamp-sized garden is so much sweeter without umbrellas covering its tables… Let us know when they come down for the season.
Soda, 629 Vanderbilt Ave, Prospect Heights, 718-230-8393
We would’ve included you in our Leafy section, but you had to uproot your huge tree to make way for a condo in back. Fuckers.
Most Romantic Garden
Palo Santo, 652 Union St, Park Slope
There’s only room for two beside the bubbling fountain at this Greenmarket fresh, pan-Latin restaurant.
