Ah yes, Valentine’s Day again: inspiring couples to canoodle and singles to sob since the Middle Ages. Here’s the Brooklyn Based guide to date ideas, how to keep the kids occupied and where to score a last-minute dinner reservation.
It might feel counterintuitive to head to the subway to linger over high culture and art, but that’s just what MoMA is encouraging. They’ve put reproductions of over 50 works of art in the Atlantic-Pacific subway station for the next month. Grab a hot chocolate and ponder a Picasso or Warhol while ignoring the hectic travelers around you. Afterward, add your own photos of the exhibition to their website.
With a date or with friends, the Fourth Annual WAGMAG Benefit Exhibition should be a blast. Look at the art for free, or buy at $200 raffle ticket to exchange for a work of art during the party. Proceeds go to support this local arts non-profit (which you may know as the producer of the free gallery guide and magazine found in shops throughout Williamsburg). Stop by ahead of time to scope out the piece you want to go home with.
Botanica, the European-style cocktail bar in Red Hook has it all figured out: kids movies screening on a full-wall projection, snacks, hot cocoa, fresh-squeezed juices and toys plus their delicious handmade cocktails and grown-up board games up front. This family-friendly party is hosted by local blog The Word on Columbia Street.

Skip those big chain stores and head to the new(ish) Paper Love in Park Slope to score some letterpress cards to give out to all your loved ones. Choose from their selection of local designers’ wrapping paper and ribbons to dress up any last-minute gifts you find wandering down 5th Avenue. All week, shops from Dean Street to 18th Street along 5th Ave. are offering special deals so you can save some cash.

All alone on Valentine’s Day? We’ve been there! Forget the romance and buy yourself one of these broken hearted (</3) shirts (or if you’re a web geek, we suppose it’s a validated heart) on Etsy.
We’ve all had that boyfriend who forgot to make reservations ahead of time and took you out for the 15th, right? Well, don’t be that guy. As of today, tables are still available at bussaco for their 5pm seating (three courses and amuse-bouche for $50) and a few spots are still open for their 7pm seating (four courses, $65). Al Di La doesn’t take reservations, but you can try to get in the day of. Tip: Have the hostess call you at Blue Ribbon down the block — they don’t take reservations, either, and while you wait you can feast on oysters at the bar, or wait it out at the wine bar around the corner.
