Masters of Ceremonies
The last Dumbolio ever at powerHouse Arena is this Saturday night (and we haven’t even been yet!). Begun in February by performer and playwright Ed Schmidt, the variety show will relocate to another, to be determined venue come January. But before its hiatus, Corey Dargel (right) will be singing a song from his musical about voluntary amputees (called, of course, “Removable Parts”). Also on the bill: “psychotherapist” Lisa Levy, who’ll be analyzing members of the audience, a hackey sack troupe, musicians Josh Max and Jessica Delfino, writer Scott Korb, and emcee Schmidt, who’ll be reading his latest (faux) letter from his lawyer, and in general, being the comedic glue that holds this shindig together. Tix $20, available here or 718-666-3049 ext. 5. Sat., 8pm, 37 Main St in Dumbo.
Tonight at BAMcafe, literary journal A Public Space hosts “Between the Lines,” where writers pair up with filmmakers for readings and screenings. Details at bam.org. Tomorrow night at Issue Project Room, the Littoral Reading Series continues with short story master Amy Hempel, Like You’d Understand, Anyway author Jim Shepard and writer Susan Daitch. Composer/ sound artist Elliot Sharp performs, too. $10, 8pm, 232 3rd St, 3rd Fl, in Gowanus, 718-330-0313.
Beginning at 2:30 on Sunday at UnionDocs, they’ll be screening all six hours of “Flying: Confessions of a Free Woman” by Jennifer Fox, who visited 17 countries and talked to 100 women in the making of the film (which The Times called “an addictive soap about sexuality and sisterhood.”) The documentary’s subjects range from the very light (love, sex, work) to the more serious (affairs, divorce, miscarriage) to the truly dark (FGM, rape, oppression). See the trailer here. RSVP at bodega@uniondocs.org to see the entire film or specific segments. Tix $8, 322 Union Ave.
Genre-bending violinist Daniel Bernard Roumain (DBR) plays BAM tomorrow and Friday in a specially commissioned multi-media work as part of the Next Wave Festival. The video preview is here. Tix $20-$35, available at bam.org.
On Friday, the very Velvet Ungerground-y, slighty Silver Jews-y, folk pop outfit Takka Takka play Union Hall at 9pm — a good alternate for the sold out Yo La Tengo show at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. $10, 702 Union St in Park Slope, 718-638-4400, unionhallny.com.
Earl Dax, producer of the excellent “Weimar New York” premieres his newest show/party, the Tingel Tangel Club at GlassLands on Friday. (see an earlier description here).
Saturday is Etsy Day at Artists & Fleas, the artists’, designers’ and collectors’ mart at 129 N. 6th, meaning designers with online Etsy shops will be vending in the flesh from 12-8, artistsandfleas.com.
Thursday thru Sunday, the Errol Grimes Dance Group performs RED, a carnivaleque dance filled with Caribbean-inspired costumes and music, starring André DeShields. Details at kumbletheater.org.
And tomorrow, attendees of the Brooklyn Arts Council’s benefit cabaret will get to party in the Caroline Ladd Pratt House at 299 Clinton Ave in Clinton Hill. Tickets are $150, available here.
Now on the homepage: “The One With the Whale” by Katie Gastley, who also designed our postcards, fresh off the local eco-printer, Rolling Press. Look for them and let us know what you think…
