Quality Turkey Time
Turkey, deadlines and family stress may all be looming large right now… but so is a glorious four-day weekend. Here, some ideas on how to fill it — and entertain those house guests.
Catch up on exhibits: If you haven’t yet seen Judy Chicago’s Dinner Party at the Brooklyn Museum—go. The level of detail and thought behind each setting at this imaginary banquet for trailblazing women is mind blowing… and you can use your cell to dial in for behind-the-scenes info on the making of (one plate took three years to get right!). The contemporary Caribbean art exhibit, “Infinite Island,” is also filled with provocative, sometimes violent work (brooklynmuseum.org).
And if you go on Saturday between 12 and 2 10 and 12 or anytime on weekdays this winter (except holidays), you can get into the Botanic Garden free next door, where the Japanese maples are aflame (bbg.org).
Across the river, the Neue Galerie is exhibiting the first museum retrospective of fin-de-siècle superstar Gustav Klimt, including paintings, drawings, personal letters and effects, like his cufflinks, and a recreation of his parlor (neuegalerie.org). And Kara Walker and Lawrence Weiner both have major retrospectives at the Whitney. Weiner’s looks especially fun (per this review), and if you want more time with his work minus the crowds, visit Bushwick’s Pocket Utopia, which has a salon dedicated to the conceptual artist and his playful phrases (pocketutopia.com).
Take the Anyplace Brooklyn tour: Download the audio files online and pick up materials at Fulton Mall for a one hour tour of Downtown Brooklyn and its contested sites of development (anyplacebrooklyn.com).
Give back: Email the Food Bank (gcary@foodbanknyc.org) to find a nearby soup kitchen or food pantry to volunteer (foodbanknyc.org). Or try the NYC Coalition Against Hunger (212-825-0028; nyccah.org).
See classic films: If you loved Javier Bardem in the Coen Bros’ new masterpiece, BAMcinematek is holding a retrospective of his films Nov. 23-26, including Julian Schnabel’s Before Night Falls, a film to brush up on before Schnabel’s much-buzzed-about The Diving Bell and the Butterfly. Also on view tonight and tomorrow are three Ingmar Bergman flicks, like Fanny and Alexander (bam.org).
Get a buzz on: Try all those bars you’ve been dying to visit, like The Gutter, the bowling alley lounge by the Barcade folks (click here); the super-swank Huckleberry Bar (718-218-8555) from Danny Meyer alums, or Sidecar, which the husband and I finally tried, and were rewarded with an amazing bahn mi sandwich with housemade sriracha sauce and yummy cocktails like the Old Cuban: rum, mint, and bitters, topped with champagne (sidecarbrooklyn.com).
Spell it out: Monday is the last chance to try to qualify for the second annual Williamsburg Spelling Bee Finals at Pete’s Candy Store. The winner gets a f-r-e-e b-a-r t-a-b. (Call to confirm if sign up is at 6:30 or 7: 718-302-3770; petescandystore.com).
Pucker up: McClure’s Pickles is celebrating its one-year anniversary at the Bushwick Country Club with free pickles, snacks, and cocktails like (we’re guessing, but it’s a good guess) spicy Bloody Marys made with McClure’s brine. Saturday at 7:30 (bushwickcountryclub.com).
Go ice skating: The Wollman Rink at Prospect Park opens tomorrow soon (read this, then check the site for details: prospectpark.org), though Central Park’s rink is really much nicer… and close to the Whitney and Neue Galerie (wollmanskatingrink.com).
Save $20: For the amazing box of goods curated by Brookyn Based and filled with the fantastic work of Brooklyn artists, designers and crafters. It goes on sale Dec. 1. Details to come next Tuesday, after your food coma has completely worn off.
Have a great week!
