Radar Love

The Perfect Chemistry jad.jpg
Head out to the Brooklyn Brewery tonight for an evening of matchmaking with Jad Abumrad, the ever-so-clever host of WNYC’s Radio Lab — or as we like to call it: “Science for Artists 101.” Billed as a “supersonic singles mixer” (not in earnest, of course), the event will include an introduction to the neuroscience of romance, an opportunity to mingle with fellow seekers and, of course, ample time to imbibe Brooklyn’s finest. After you’re sufficiently lubricated, Jad will give you a chance to share your favorite love story. (The winner goes home with an iPod!) Don’t worry if you’re shy. Jad assures us that the evening won’t be broadcast. More importantly, he says, “Beer will play an integral part.” $40 bucks at the door. 7-10 PM at the Brooklyn Brewery, 79 N 11th St. at Wythe (718.486.7422; brooklynbrewery.com).

Also on our radar…

isaac.jpgSoul
STAX Records celebrates its 50th anniversary tonight at powerHouse Arena in DUMBO with free beer and DJs spinning music from soul legends like Isaac Hayes and Booker T & the MGs. It’s the kick-off event to Brooklyn’s third annual Hip Hop Festival, which this year is celebrating hip hop culture through exhibitions and films like Wild Style in addition to its main event, the all-day concert on June 23 headlined by Wu-Tang MC Ghostface Killah. Tonight from 6-9 PM, powerHouse Arena, 37 Main St. at Water St. (718.666.3049; powerhousearena.com).

Pride
LGBT Pride Month in Manhattan has been soured by the city’s decision not to grant a permit to move PRIDEfest to Chelsea, and out of the tiny, cramped streets of the West Village. Surely that will only heighten the sense of Brooklyn Pride, which starts Saturday at the Bartel-Pritchard Square at Prospect Park West and 15th St. at 11 AM. Parade begins there at 8:30 PM (brooklynpride.org).

Atlantic Art Fest
The work of over 130 artists will be on view during this weekend’s Atlantic Avenue Art Walk, which is packed with auxillary events like free workshops on pillow-making, Circus Amok performers on stilts, happy hour specials at area bars like Hank’s, and a site-specific project about the waited and the waited upon inside Jolie restaurant. Saturday and Sunday from 11 AM to 6 PM. For details and map, click here.

Booze Cruise

Next Saturday, June 16, from 5-8 PM, the American Littoral Society (which has nothing to do with literature, or taking things at face value — the word describes anything related to a shore or coastline), is organizing its last sunset cruise in Sheepshead Bay this spring aboard the 96-foot Dorothy B VIII. The $45 narrated tour of the backwater marshes of the bay includes wine and cheese. Call 718.318.9344 or e-mail driepe@nyc.rr.com to RSVP (alsnyc.org).
