Seeing Double
(and sometimes triple)

Two Book Parties
While not creating quirky short story collections or blockbuster indie flicks, Miranda July, along with artist and co-provacateur Harrell Fletcher, have been assigning the public odd tasks like “write down a recent argument” or ” braid someone’s hair.” The responses, in the form of videos, texts, photographs and drawings, are then posted on their site, learningtoloveyoumore.com, like a giant experiment in creative crowdsourcing. July and Fletcher compiled 200 of the best entries (so far) for a new eponymous book, available here. You can see some of the submissions live, at The Journal Gallery, 168 N. 1st, near Bedford, this Saturday from 6-9pm, where July, in town for the New Yorker Festival, will be on hand for the opening.
Autobiographical cartoonist and New Yorker illustrator Adrian Tomine appears at BookCourt tonight at 7pm for the release of his first, full-length graphic novel Shortcomings, a typical Tomine tale of a soured relationship that he calls “the most ‘fictional’ story I’ve written.”
Two Open Houses
OpenHouseNY will lead 150 tours and open the doors to some 200 homes and buildings throughout the city this weekend. New on the Brooklyn roster of tours (available here) is the air control tower tour at Floyd Bennett Field, the city’s first airport and site of many record-breaking flights, like Howard Hughes’ round-the-world trip in 1938 (in which he beat the time of a “one-eyed Wiley Post”). You can actually visit the tower every Sunday at 1pm, but the OHNY tour grants unprecedented access to the airport’s passenger tunnels, used in foul weather to board planes. Make it a field trip and visit the city’s biggest community garden, right off the tarmac, and the newly refurbished bathhouse at Riis Park (reservations required for many tours).
The first-ever house and garden tour of the newly landmarked Crown Heights North Historic District is noon to five this Saturday. Purchase the $25 tix here, and read amusing, typically nasty Brownstoner back and forth about the tour here.
*BB reader and GreenHomeNYC volunteer Abby Kelly wrote in to say GreenHomeNYC is also having an open house of green homes throughout the city. Details here.
Two Sales
Decoupage jewelry designers wabisabi brooklyn will host a Fall Fiesta Sunday at 7pm in Carroll Gardens (details here). Built By Wendy in Williamsburg is having a sample sale of last fall’s collection, Fri-Sun.
Two New Sites
Gripe about the loud people above you on RottenNeighbor.com and check out the “not-Brownstoner,” ReclaimedHome.com.
Two First Saturdays
The Brooklyn Museum hosts its First Saturday in celebration of their contemporary Caribbean art exhibition, “Infinite Island” and BAM’s Next Wave Festival. Southpaw’s monthly dance party The Rub returns Saturday at 10pm.
Two Renovations
The Williamsburg Art and Historical Center has reopened after a $200K reno (Barbara Leven’s photo, Taxi, on our homepage, is featured in their new show), and Design Sponge got itself a fresh redesign: designspongeonline.com.
