Soul men
A strange horn signals the title track of Myth Takes, the third album from the Brooklyn octet, !!!
(often pronounced chk chk chk), like a pied piper calling all the freaks to come out. It crescendoes into the frenetic, energetic “All My Heroes Are Weirdos,” and then kicks into drive on “Must Be the Moonlight,” the kind of song that would make even the most shy soul move. This isn’t sugar pop dance music, this is polyrhythmic, percussive, electronic, big-sounding, interesting— like the bastard son of Devo and Funkadelic. And with a few exceptions, they sustain their irresistible sound throughout the album.
Live, they’re even better. Their performances have been compared to pure sex on stage, and here in New York, they’re noted for actually getting people to dance. You can see them one last time next Wednesday, May 30, at Studio B in Greenpoint, before they depart on an insane summer tour.
We would love to offer tickets for this week’s photo quiz, but we’ve got the next best thing: the album itself, Myth Takes. You won’t get the full experience of their live show, but you will get an album with cover art that’s a cross between The Garden of Earthly Delights and Where the Wild Things Are. And we’ve got copies for the first two people who can guess where in Brooklyn the photo below was taken. Just reply to this email with the answer.
