The Sale Whisperer
Kim Mingo loves the thrill of the hunt. A devoted stoop sale shopper, she was giddy the other weekend at having found a photo album for one dollar that turned out to be worth about $100.
“Stoop sale-ing is part of my weekend ritual, but I always had this anxiety that I might be missing the best sale right around the corner,” says Mingo, a cell phone interface designer who lives in Carroll Gardens. So, to ensure she has the 411 on every sale around every corner, she decided to create StoopSales.com, a website that lists all the moving out, fundraising, liquidating-the-ex’s-assets, and spring cleaning sales in Brooklyn.
Mingo’s site is more than just a gussied up Craigslist. “I thought, wouldn’t it be great if I could plan out my route, armed with a map for finding the best junk?” She designed the homepage so you can view sales sorted by time of day, date, and neighborhood. Register with the site, and you can post your own sales, with photos, or create a list of stoops to visit, complete with street maps.
The site launched last week with just nine listings, but Mingo hopes more people will post as word gets around.
Already, one of her featured sales led us to some cool wares from two interior designers who were moving out of the Slope. We passed on the taxidermy, Moroccan rug, and the fake coral tchochkes, but we did pick up a $10 chunk of real coral. Thanks, StoopSales.
Today’s post brought to you by Sara. To see posts you may have missed (like “Garden Fever” or “Homemade Kibbles”) because of technical difficulties that we’ve now fixed, visit the archives at www.brooklynbased.net.
