Rite of Spring
The sensual, funky Brazilian dance company Grupo Corpo is heating up BAM’s opera house with two New York premieres. In the first, Benguele, the 21-member troupe fuses Afro-Brazilian dance and Capoeira in a vibrant saga about nostalgia and celebration, set to a polyrhythmic score by Brazilian legend Joao Bosco. The second, darker piece, Breu, features the more modern, eclectic sounds of Latin Grammy-winning musician Lenine. March 27-29, tickets $20-60, bam.org
League Night
If you’ve ever arrived at Gutter, only to realize you’re too late to score a lane, joining the new Gutter bowling league will guarantee playing time. The 12-week season meets Thursdays at 8pm; email gutterbowlingleague@gmail.com by this Friday if you can round up a six-person team by April 3, opening night.
Red Hook Opening
Metal and Thread, a new furniture, housewares and jewelry depot from Derek Dominy and Denise Carbonell, formerly of the L.E.S. shop Denise Carbonell Gallery, opens this Saturday at 4 pm. 398 Van Brunt St., between Dikeman and Coffey, 718-414-9651
The Fairest of Them All
Hundreds of galleries worldwide have descended on Manhattan for annual art fairs like the Armory Show, but a few are making their NY debut: Bridge, whose focus this year is Asian art; VOLTA, a fair filled only with installations and solo projects; and Soho’s Dark Fair, which takes the prize for most unusual theme. Electricity and natural light are off-limits at this mini-fair, which means a ton of innovative, old-school ways to experience art — by candlelight, oil lamps, human power, and glow-in-the-dark magic. $5; Fri.-Sat. at the Swiss Institute, 495 Broadway between Spring and Broome, swissinstitute.net.
Arborio Throwdown
BB is totally remiss in not alerting foodies to the Risotto Challenge at Loki Lounge next Wednesday. But while entry is closed, the public is invited to taste the 20 competing risottos. 8 pm, 304 Fifth Ave. in Park Slope, noteatingoutinny.com
