Tip Sheet: 4.23 - 4.27
Blood Ties
Tapping the same, dark comedic vein of a Martin McDonagh play, The Walworth Farce by Enda Walsh, now at St. Ann’s, is horrifying in the most entertaining sense. The first act seems like a drawn-out gag, as a father and his two sons play act a madcap tale in their London flat. You think they’re simply bonkers, until a stranger appears and breaks the hermetic seal of their insane little world, and all the violence beneath their farcical routine surfaces. Stephen King could learn a few tricks from this Irish playwright. Tickets are $47.50. Through May 4. stannswarehouse.org
Film Fests
The Tribeca Film Fest has landed, bringing premieres like Baby Mama and star-studded events like a free series of talks with actors and directors Clive Owen, Amy Poehler, Harmony Korine, Paul Haggis, and more at the Soho Apple store, April 25-May 4.
Closer to home, BAM is hosting its own film fest, Creatively Speaking, Friday through Sunday. The multi-culti program encompasses communities of color worldwide, from Argentina to Aboriginal Australia, but the shorts, documentaries and features favor stories about black identity in America and political and cultural perspectives of Africa, like the engaging concert film Africa Unite, in which Bob Marley’s 60th birthday commemoration in Ethiopia serves as a backdrop for discussions on Rastafaris and African independence. bam.org
Soup’s On
For all those working in the Burg and the Prospect Heights/Park Slope borderland, Marlow & Sons and Flatbush Farm recently added lunch hours. Carolyn Bane, one of the partners of Pies ‘n’ Thighs, is now cooking during Marlow’s new afternoon hours, and the special this week, surprise surprise, is fried chicken. Keep your expectations in check, though, because a poached egg salad may be featured next. (11 am-4 pm, marlowandsons.com). Flatbush Farm is serving comfort fare like BLTs and mac and cheese, from 11:30-3 (flatbushfarm.com).
The fancy Mexican resto Barrio, owned by Spencer Rothschild (BLT Prime) and chef Adrian Leon (Rosa Mexicano), opened Monday in Park Slope, and as a preemptive “sorry!” for the bumpy service in its first week, they’re offering a 15 percent discount on lunch and dinner through April 30.
