Tip Sheet: Aug. 5-Aug. 11

WEDNESDAY: Watch-Worthy Retrospective
BAMcinematek pays tribute to one of Hollywood’s all-time leading men with a Cary Grant retrospective, running through August 20. Highlights this week include tonight’s Holiday, with Katherine Hepburn, and Hitchcock’s Suspicion, costarring Joan Fontaine, on Sunday.

Hoopdy Hoop
The Bell House hosts its first hula hoop jam with four DJs spinning Bollywood and hip-hop, artist Elaine Tian (who supplies a ton of musicians with her custom hoops) and Hoopilates instructor Jen Bleier. Tian’s creations will be available to try or buy.

Yes You Can
Wanna learn how to put up jams, jellies, pickles and preserves? Sweet Deliverance still has a few slots open in their canning class tonight. Kelly Geary will demonstrate several seasonal recipes and share general safety guidelines, canning tips and instructions.

THURSDAY: Let’s Go Crazy
Celebrate Brooklyn honors the 25th anniversary of one of Prince’s most memorable works, Purple Rain, by screening the film of the same name. Even better: You’re encouraged to sing along. Joy Dragland and her group Escort host the festivities, which start at 7:30pm. Lace and frilly costumes encouraged.

Lit Dates
After wallowing in the downside of love with Jami Attenberg, Michelle Green, and Said Sayrafiezadeh — who read from the anthology Love is a four letter Word: True Stories of Breakups, Bad Relationships, and Broken Hearts at WORD bookstore Thursday at 7:30pm — add yourself to the shop’s matchmaking service for literary peeps.

FRIDAY: Get Shorty
Musicians The Dead Sextons and guests soundtrack shorts by underground NY filmmakers like Mike Kuchar at Galapagos’s second installment of “The New Uprising of The Eastern North American Underground.”

SATURDAY: Live Anime
Catch animated art both on screen and in person at All Day Anime, part of the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition’s summer-long pier show, Art in Changing Perspectives. The afternoon event will offer screenings of Japanese animated featurettes as well as a live fashion show of anime-inspired costumes. Bring your own and join in the fun, which begins at 2pm.

Hot Wheels
Open Source Gallery taught 20 kids to build their own soap box cars from recycled materials (including the odd umbrella) and during the block party on 17th St. between 5th and 6th this Saturday they’ll be racing them (safely in twos) in their first annual Soap Box Derby before a few adults who couldn’t resist making their own.

Burger Me
Tonight’s event at Bushwick’s Laundromat Gallery gives a new name to the hunger for art: the participating artists will be grilling up burgers themed after artists and concepts. The edible artworks range from $5-$20, but checking out selections from the Laundromat’s Flat File is free. Art history has never been this tasty.

Baby Bok Choy, Oh My
If you haven’t already been, check out the brand-new farmers market in Bed-Stuy on Malcolm X Blvd. between Chauncey and Marion Sts., open Saturdays 8am to 1pm, for greens that kick Super Foodtown butt.

SUNDAY: The Force
This week, Habana Outpost, the eco-Cuban eatery in Fort Greene, screens Star Wars (the original, of course) in their courtyard. The intergalactic space odyssey begins at sunset, and should prove more epic than ever under the stars — with margaritas to boot. 8pm.

Fu You
The only surviving silent kung-fu flick is brought to life by a collaboration between Rooftop Films and Devil Music Ensemble. While the film plays outside Greenpoint’s Automotive High School, the three members of the Devil Music Ensemble perform their original score, using everything from traditional Chinese instruments to synthesizers. Afterward, there’s an open bar at Matchless.

Bowl More
The Gutter’s Outer Borough Open Invitational Bowling Tournament starts at 2pm today, with prizes for the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners. $20 entry fee includes bowling, shoes and a cold beer.

TUESDAY: Drink Local
Bar Great Harry hosts a special night of local brews from Kelso of Brooklyn. And by local, we mean local: The brewery’s New Town Kriek is made with cherries from New York, while the hops in the Dry-Hopped St. Gowanus cask ale come straight from our own state as well. As for the Carroll Gardens Wit — well, we just really like the name. Taps turn over at 6pm.

Salon Down Under
Christian Capurro
, an Australian artist and current resident at ISCP, is the featured guest at this week’s free salon starting at 6pm. The artist will be discussing his work in his talk by the same name of his 1999 work, “Trying to keep more than one thing in your head at any given time.” His focus on the reproduction and reinvention of the image should keep things interesting. ISCP, 1040 Metropolitan Ave., 3rd Floor, East Williamsburg.

TV on the Park
Local boys TV on the Radio play a Celebrate Brooklyn benefit show with openers Chin Chin and Gang Gang Dance. This one is not to be missed–they’re a great live show and they really get the crowd going at outdoor venues.

Plan Ahead: Summer Garden Party
Start planning your outfit for the Linnaean Libation League’s first cocktail and music gathering at Brooklyn Botanic Garden next Thursday, August 13th (which we’re co-hosting!). Bring one of the Libation League calling cards found at locales listed here, and you could win a year’s BBG membership.
