Tip Sheet: Aug. 6-Aug. 11

Hungry Eyes
Whatever became of Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey after “Dirty Dancing”? Their moves were immortalized in a scene-for-scene Bollywood remake. Saturday the two movies will be shown side by side at the recently renovated and reopened Monkey Town — because nobody puts Muskaan in a corner! (site>>)

Water Park
Four local boating groups and boathouses will lure land lubbers to the cove between the Brooklyn and Manhattan Bridges this Saturday with free kayaks, canoes and rowboats to paddle on the East River. Aug 9, 2-6 pm and five other weekends through Sep. 14, Brooklyn Bridge Park (site>>).

spider.jpgThe Open Road
Whether you set out on foot or by bike, take advantage of the car-free route from Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park the next three Saturdays: See “Hair” (site>>); hear sonic experimentalists Battles and Gang Gang Dance Aug. 16 (site>>), and check out the Guggenheim retrospective of sculptor Louise Bourgeois, most famous for her 30-foot-tall spider, “Maman” (site>>). Summer Streets, Aug. 9, 16 and 23, 7 am-1 pm (site>>).

Four-Alarm Food
Too hot to hold a chili cookoff you say? “Mexicans and Texans who invented chili con carne live in a hot place year round!” says Matt Timms, organizer of the Brooklyn Chili Takedown. Enter to win $100, or pay $10 to sample every spicy variation. Sun., 5 pm at Union Pool (site>>).

We knew Rob and Robin would ultimately visit The General Greene — but who knew they’d give it a whopping four stars? (site>>)

Carroll Gardens-based, Ukraine-born chanteuse Alina Simone, often likened to Chan Marshall, performs songs from “Everyone Is Crying Out to Me, Beware,” her much anticipated tribute to Soviet punk icon, Yanka Dyagileva, Friday at Union Hall. (site>>).

Old (and New) Souls
The Roots lyricist and R&B songstress Jill Scott plays Wingate Field in East Flatbush Monday (site>>). The Swell Season (the couple from the movie “Once”), African singer Angelique Kidjo, and others pay a tribute to “Lovely Day” Bill Withers at the Prospect Park Bandshell Sat. night (site>>). And Bed-Stuy born Richie Havens sparks Woodstock flashbacks at the summer’s last Metrotech concert tomorrow, Aug. 7 at noon, before his September gig at Le Poisson Rouge (site>>).

Sunday Moves
You might not know him by name, but you’ve probably heard John Tejada’s beats on his remix of “Such Great Heights” by The Postal Service. The West Coast DJ is spinning at the weekly Sunday Best dance party at Gowanus outdoor venue The Yard, where every Sunday this month kids get in free and are treated to VIP popsicles and a special dance area (site>>).

Crazy Eights
The Boredoms get 88 drummers to play 88 minutes starting at 8:08pm on 8/8/08, making last year’s 7/7/07 event look like child’s play (site>>).

Reel Coney Island
If you’ve only seen snippets of Harold Lloyd’s Coney Island slapstick sequence in the 1928 film “Speedy,” catch it in full tonight at BAM, where the Alloy Orchestra provides a live score to this silent lookback at 1920s NYC (site>>).

Last Dip
Before the last season of films, concerts, and performances drains out of McCarren Park Pool, enjoy every last drop: The free Hamlet riff, “Twelve Ophelias,” a bluegrass-scored imagining of Ophelia rising from her watery grave runs through Aug. 22 (site>>); “Blue Velvet,” “Velvet Goldmine” and “Rushmore” are the last SummerScreen films (site>>); the remaining free JellyNYC Pool Parties include the Felice Brothers this Sun.; Aesop Rock Aug. 17, and Yo La Tengo (above) Aug. 24 (site>>), and tickets are still available for Sonic Youth on Aug. 30, as of now the pool’s last show (site>>).

To keep the party going, sign this petition for a performance space at the proposed Bushwick Inlet Park (then forward it to friends).
