Tip Sheet: Jan. 27-Feb. 2

WEDNESDAY: Curiouser and Curiouser
Go down the rabbit hole with the Irondale Ensemble in their site-specific production of alice…Alice…ALICE. The family-friendly show, based on Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland, leads audience members through all sorts of Wonderland-esque nooks and crannies found in Fort Greene’s Irondale Center and features both scripted and improvised dialogue, as well as original music from the company. The production runs through February 20th, but only 12 people are allowed in each nighttime journey.
Help Haiti
Tonight’s Haiti Benefit at the Bell House–featuring local legends like Ted Leo (above)–is sold out, but follow their twitter feed to see if any more tickets will be released. If you still want to go out and help out, Friday night’s Haiti fundraiser at Public Assembly features Afrika Bambaataa, with donations going to the Red Cross.
THURSDAY: Non-Motivational Speakers
At JLA Studios in Dumbo, Gelf Magazine hosts its free monthly lecture series, “Non-Motivational Speakers,” with an eclectic lineup of guests: Prospect Park West author Amy Sohn, bike evangelist Baruch Herzfeld of the infamous Bedford Bike Wars, and Dr. Jay Parkinson, the wired M.D. behind Hello Health. Doors open at 7pm.

Close to Home
Tonight at WORD in Greenpoint, local author Jami Attenberg (deemed the “Joyce Carol Oates of Brooklyn” by HuffPo) reads from her latest novel, The Melting Season, about a woman who leaves home in the hopes of rebirth and is inevitably forced to confront the past. A discussion and Q&A follows.
FRIDAY: Brooklyn Beats
Be reminded why people worldwide look to Brooklyn as a font of innovative music with this month’s Sounds Like Brooklyn festival. Venues across the borough will be filled to the brim with the best of Brooklyn’s music scene both this weekend and next, with next weekend offering fantastic gigs like Takka Takka at the Bell House and Japanther at Station 171. This weekend kicks off the good times with two star-studded shows at BAM. Tonight, Les Savy Fav bring their super-zany fun to the Opera House; the recently-trendy Vivian Girls open. Tomorrow night, TV on the Radio’s Kyp Malone presents his solo project Rain Machine, preceded by Anti-Pop Consortium’s thoughtful hip-hop.
Mozart’s Mass
The Brooklyn Conservatory Chorale, accompanied by members of the Brooklyn Conservatory Community Orchestra, performs Mozart’s haunting last work, the Requiem Mass in D Minor, at Park Slope’s Old First Reform Church at 8pm, and again at 3pm on Sunday at St. Ann and the Holy Trinity in Brooklyn Heights. Tickets are $10.
Midnight Marauders
At 12am, comedian Leo Allen, burlesque queens The Pontani Sisters and musical guests bring the sexy cabaret-style “Midnight Special” show to The Bell House, at half the price of The Box.
SATURDAY: The Art of Soap (BB Deal)
Learn to make delicious-smelling, organic soap at skinnyskinny’s soap-making class in Williamsburg, and save 20% on the class when you use the code brooklyn-based. Offer’s good on all products in store and online, too.

SUNDAY: Taco Tasting
Next up in Theo Peck and Nick Suarez’s line of competitive cook-offs: The Brooklyn Taco Experiment. Like the duo’s previous ventures–the Brooklyn Beer, Cheese, and Chocolate Experiments–the competition pits amateur chefs against each other, this time as they vie for the title of Best Taco Filling. (To even the playing field a bit, all tortillas will be provided to the contestants day-of by Brooklyn’s Tortilleria Chinantla.) The fun starts at 1pm at the Bell House, as guests get to sample the entries and help pick the winner along with celebrity judges like Red Hook Vendors Honcho Cesar Fuentes. A portion of each ticket goes to ovarian cancer research, but if it sells out, head to the after party for free Maker’s Mark from 5-6pm, and free Churros and hot chocolate from Cascabel Taqueria.
PYTs on Ice
It’s all Michael Jackson, all afternoon in Prospect Park as the Wollman Rink dedicates its afternoon skate to the King of Pop. The tunes start at 2pm. Don’t forget your silver glove.

PLAN AHEAD: V-Day in Your PJs
That’s right. On Thursday Feb. 11 BK Hookup invites you to come dressed in your finest flannels to our Valentine’s Pajama Party Meatup at The Bell House. Free Lillet cocktails and Smuttynose IPAs from 7-8, speed-dating for those who really want a Valentine, outrageous shenanigans by funny girl Sara Schaefer and special guests, plus DJ Workhorse (AKA Jonny Con Carne) will keep the slumber party going well past bedtime. Those who buy a $12 advance ticket (there are men’s and ladies’ ticket links to even the playing field), will be matched up with their own true loves.
