FRIDAY: Art Stumble
Just when you thought New Year’s had killed early January’s social calendar, the artsy crowd has you covered with a smattering of new shows in North BK. Jenny Morgan’s shockingly intimate oil portraits have a raw quality that only becomes apparent during close inspection; her intriguing show “Abrasions” kicks off at Like the Spice Gallery on Friday night, 6:30-10pm, while artist and former Cameroon political prisoner Issa Nyaphaga debuts a collection of post-election cartoons labeled “Barackuda” along with a live musical performance at Artbreak Gallery. The same night, openings abound at Cinders Gallery, Klaus Von Nichtssagend, Live With Animals, HQ Gallery, Momenta Art, Slate, Ch’i Contemporary
SATURDAY: Indoor Flea
Taking a hiatus from its Fort Greene location until spring, the Brooklyn Flea is moving to Dumbo for 12 weekends starting this Saturday. The Flea’s indoor Winter Pop-Up Market, located in a storefront on the corner of Front and Washington, will feature 25 vendors of antique furniture, vintage clothing, jewelry and more.
Glass-Blown Away
Aspiring glass artists can tour UrbanGlass’ glassblowing facility or participate in one of their glassworking workshops as part of its Sketch & Sculpt Open House on Saturday, starting at noon. Instead of kicking your Christmas tree to the curb, bring your tree to Prospect Park’s MulchFest this Saturday at either of these two locations between 10am and 2pm, and take home some of the resulting mulch for use on your lawn or garden.
