Tip Sheet: Jul. 28-Aug. 3

WEDNESDAY: Au Revoir BBQ
Tonight’s Finger on the Pulse BBQ at Good Company, formerly Hope Lounge, has BBQ food for $5 a plate from Mile End Delicatessen (they do more than just bagels!) and a DJ set from Au Revoir Simone. Show at 7pm for the eats, but stay until 11pm for the party.

THURSDAY: Green Planter
The Center for Urban Greenscaping hosts a seminar on the hot topic of sub-irrigated urban greenscaping Thursday from 7-8:30pm at Gowanus Studio Space, for city dwellers who want to grow fruits, veggies, and flowers with minimal water, time, and drain on the environment.

FRIDAY: Summer Homework
School might be out for summer, but that’s no reason to miss out on Greenpoint’s own School of the Future. Described as an “inter-generational free school,” this reimagining of the academic experience takes learning to a whole new level. So far this month, classes have included Generating Authentic Ritual, Costume Sports: Basketball, Soccer, or Handball, and Gender, Identity, and Making Moustaches. Though this weekend is the last one of the month-long experiment, they’ve got some great classes. Friday night includes Conviction Fiction Practicum: Flight or Invisibility? as well as Radical Library Sciences, a discussion on innovative new ideas about the role of the library. On Saturday, classes include Learning Languages Guerrilla Style, the less-educational/more-hilarious Human Size Chess! (exclamation mark theirs), and Easy-to-Draw Dictators, a self-explanatory class that promises to culminate in a singalong. Information on the free enrollment can be found on the School of the Future’s website.

Aren’t They All…
Try to separate truth from fiction this Friday at Greenlight Bookstore when New York author Gary Shteyngart (The Russian Debutante’s Handbook, Absurdistan) reads from his new book Super Sad True Love Story, set in a semi-illiterate America of the future. The reading starts at 7:30pm.

Animated Sleep
The 7th Annual Animation Block Party opens Friday at Rooftop Films on the lawn of Automotive High complete with a music warm up by The Big Sleep and an open-bar afterparty at Matchless. The animated film fest continues over the weekend at BAM.

SATURDAY: Greenpoint Block Party
Imagine a world in which the Total Franklin Street Immersion was a monthly event, and expanded throughout Greenpoint. Thanks to the Greenpoint Business Association and its Last Saturdays in Greenpoint, that dream has become a reality. Shops, restaurants, and bars on and around Franklin Street throughout the neighborhood will be offering discounts and specials, from a shuffleboard biathlon at the Diamond to free Black Rabbit lager to the first 150 customers at Black Rabbit. BB fave WORD will be hosting a book swap to benefit the Greenpoint Public Library, and gorgeous accessory shop Old Hollywood will be celebrating their move to Franklin Street with wine, cheese, and a Harlow in Chains trunk show. Other participating locales on Manhattan Ave., Greenpoint Ave., Franklin St. and Nassau Ave. include Fred Flare, Open Air Modern and Keg and Lantern. And as if there weren’t enough freebies, there will also be a raffle for tickets to an upcoming Mets game.

Small Press Fest
Get to know your local zine scene at Saturday’s Mini Zine Fest at Pete’s Candy Store. Though the festival may be small, the talent is outsized–bookmaking guru Esther K. Smith is a featured guest, and representatives from some truly cool zines like FOUND Magazine, We’ll Never Have Paris, and Absent Cause will be flogging their wares. Live music and beer will provide the backdrop for the literary mingling.

Starry Starry Night
Impress your Saturday night date for free at Fort Greene Park’s stargazing, co-hosted by the Amateur Astronomers Association of New York and the Urban Park Rangers. As long as the weather’s clear, some serious sky-searching should transpire; if it’s too rainy or cloudy to get a good view, save the picnic basket and blanket for August 7th, the rain date.

MONDAY: Push It
Wingate Field’s free concert series in East Flatbush is kicking it old school with Salt-n-Pepa, Naughty By Nature, and Slick Rick. Lines run long, so come as early as you can before the 7:30pm show. Directions on the site.

TUESDAY: Dead Show
Take a few parts Raconteurs, a few parts White Stripes, and a few parts The Kills, and you’ll get The Dead Weather, Jack White’s new collaboration with Alison Mosshart (The Kills), Jack Lawrence (The Raconteurs, The Greenhornes), and Dean Fertita (Queens of the Stone Age). The new supergroup plays a Celebrate Brooklyn! benefit show on Tuesday. Doors at 6:30pm, the rocking starts at 7:30 (these shows are punctual). Austin band Harlem opens.

PLAN AHEAD: Rockaway Bungalows
If you’ve been to Rockaway Beach lately (or just made the trek for Rockaway Taco), you’ve probably noticed the ramshackle old houses among the newer condos and apartment complexes. The independent documentary The Bungalows of Rockaway explores the past of some of these buildings, tracing them back to 1905 when they were first built, and to the 1930s when there were over 7000 of them. The film screens at Post Theater at Fort Tilden on August 22, but reservations are required by August 13.
