Tip Sheet: Jul. 29-Aug. 4

WEDNESDAY: Film Legend
BAMCinematek hosts the New York premiere of I Knew It Was You, director Richard Shepard’s new documentary on the late John Cazale, whose movie career was brief but memorable: The actor starred in five Oscar-nominated films before passing away of bone cancer in 1978, at the age of 42. The documentary is part of a five-day series at BAM titled Rediscovering John Cazale, which features all of Cazale’s films: the first two Godfather movies, A Dog Day Afternoon, The Conversation, and The Deer Hunter. Shepard introduces the screenings on Wednesday and Thursday.
Retail Therapy
Tonight and tomorrow, 65 boutiques from Bay Ridge to Greenpoint will stay open late (until 10pm!), serve wine and goodies, and offer great sales. Ft. Greene fave Thistle & Clover has 10% off non-sale items and some pre-fall pieces in from local designers Wren and Sunner. See all participating locations here.
Tailored Eats
Tonight’s Finger on the Pulse BBQ at Hope Lounge features highbrow BBQ fusion grub (like mole cornbread, root beer pulled pork, and apple miso crisp) from Tailor chef Sam Mason (also of Dinner with the Band). $5 will get you a plate of food and one free beer, plus the DJ sounds of the Harlem Shakes. 7-11pm.
THURSDAY: Catch a Classic
Cary Grant and Grace Kelly light up the big screen in Brooklyn Bridge Park, as the Movies With a View summer film series marks its halfway point with Alfred Hitchcock’s To Catch a Thief.

FRIDAY: Superior Party
It’s La Superior’s first birthday party at Monkeytown. From 11pm on, they’ll be spinning mexican beats and serving up banderitas (a 3-layer drink that resembles the Mexican flag, made from spicy tomato juice, Tequila blanco, and sweetened lime juice), 2 for 1 until midnight, to celebrate one year in operation for the Williamsburg mecca for tasty and tiny tacos and street food.
Naughty or Nice
Summer heat be damned, celebrate Christmas in July at Oulu at 9pm until late this Friday. Wear your holiday finest and bring a $5 gift for the grab bag.
SATURDAY: Park Punks
This Saturday at 10am, meet on the Driggs side of the track at McCarren Park for a free rope jumping clinic from the Punk Rope folks. And at 11am, stick around to watch two double dutch champs doing a tutorial for the Punk Rope instructors themselves. In the event of rain, they’ll convene down Lorimer under the BQE.

SATURDAY: Motionless Pictures
From 1964 to 1966, Andy Warhol shot a series of what he called Screen Tests: silent films featuring one person who usually, as instructed by Warhol, did nothing but stare back at the camera. Dean & Britta have composed scores to 13 of these films — which feature then-ascending stars such as Lou Reed, Edie Sedgwick, and Dennis Hopper — and the results are as mesmerizing as the motionless faces they accompany. The Luna alums will perform these soundtracks live at a screening of the films at Celebrate Brooklyn! Saturday evening. Our borough’s own psychedelic garage rockers Crystal Stilts open at 7:30pm.
Paddle Art
Ambiguous Open House, the traveling show featuring 800 ping pong paddles decorated by international artists makes a stop at 303Grand this Saturday night at 8pm. Free drinks!
SUNDAY: Alternative Transportation
The Gowanus Studio Space screens The Third Wheel, Brian Schoenfelder’s documentary on the growth of pedicabs as an industry in New York City and how this growth led directly to a clash with the city’s government. A Q&A with Peter Meitzle, a founder of the New York City pedicab industry, follows the screening, which starts at 8:30pm. Admission is $10 and Kelso beer is just $3.
