Tip Sheet: July 16-20

Sweet Spot
In the hoopla over the Waterfalls, we overlooked Pier 1, the urban oasis at Brooklyn Bridge Park (thanks for the tip, Alison!). The appeal? Wine, beer, and affordable fare like fish tacos in a still-quiet, waterfront public park, with a patch of grass and sand overlooking Manhattan and Olafur Eliasson’s industrial waterworks. Open till Labor Day. brooklynbridgepark.org
One-Man Bard
We can’t vouch for Jess Winfield’s acting abilities, but his audacity is clear: the man will attempt to set the world record for most Shakespeare Plays Performed Solo in Brooklyn — while traveling from the Ikea ferry in Manhattan to Red Hook’s bars, soccer fields, and finally, Freebird Books’ backyard. Join him Saturday at the water taxi at Pier 11 in Manhattan at 2 pm or at 2:30 at Van Dyke and Dwight Sts. in Red Hook.
Red Hook Soccer Fields, “Famous Corn” and Cocktails for your iPhone
After a 3-month delay, the Red Hook Vendors will sling their huaraches and pupusas again this weekend. Some vendors spent as much as $50 grand bringing their carts up to code; repay them with your longsuffering ceviche cravings (10 am-7 pm, Sat.-Sun., Bay St. at Clinton). Brownstoner unveiled a genius, Zagat’s-like restaurant reviewing system this week that everyone can weigh in on. Called “Restaurant of the Week,” its first two subjects have been Habana Outpost and Applewood. At Prospect Heights’ Barrette on Thursday, Sixpoint Craft Ales and the nouveau-Southern Brown Betty Cafe team up for a $25, four-course, beer-paired dinner including a watercress and grilled peach salad with Cojito cheese (full menu here>>) Take that, Restaurant Week. Sunday, 4-9 pm, 3rd Ward holds its first dance party/pig roast, with famous meat-man Tom Mylan manning the spit. And while a Manhattan cocktail historian created the “Pocket Mixologist” for iPhones, it will help you mix a Brooklyn Cocktail in a pinch.
Siren Songs
Friday night at the Prospect Park Bandshell, The Metropolis Ensemble’s electronica take on “The Rite of Spring” warms up the crowd for Deerhoof’s experimental-yet-melodic art-rock. Saturday at the Bandshell, JDub Records — the folks behind Balkan Beat Box and other genre-bending bands — celebrate 5 years with special guests like Jon Langford of the Mekons. Further South, Stephen Malkmus headlines the jam-packed, Coney boardwalk bonanza that is the Siren Fest. Afterwards, Music Hall of Williamsburg hosts hometown-favorites Apes and Androids and A Place to Bury Strangers at the Siren After Party. And at McCarren Pool on Sunday, the must-see-live Liars play the free Pool Party (hear all the headliners on our April and June Mix Tapes).
One Woman’s Trash…
Thursday night, 3rd Ward founder Jason Goodman’s other creative org, Artists Wanted, heads to Chelsea to host a block party outside White Box gallery for the opening of Kim Holleman’s Solo Show, “TRASHNAMI! CIRCA 2012: Ruminations on a Changing World,” where her surreal “land art,” like a massive, trash-bag tidal wave and mobile public park (a k a “Trailer Park”) will be installed. Outside, a flatbed truck will stage DJs for the celebratory street party. July 17th, 6- 11 pm, 525 West 26 St., whiteboxny.org

Epaulet, Smith St.’s sleek new boutique, has a 25% sale on men’s and women’s clothes including those by hotshot label Christopher Deane, and Cloth in Fort Greene is taking 30-70 percent off everything.
