Tip Sheet: Jun. 17-Jun. 23

WEDNESDAY: Free Laughs
Tonight at 8pm, local comedian favorites Max, Gabe, and Jenny present their Big Terrific comedy showcase at Cameo, in back of the Lovin’ Cup Cafe (where you can get their delicious grilled cheese with truffle oil). They are coming off of their first year anniversary show last week and, as always, are laying out the laughs for free.

Film Fest Fever
Opening night of BAMcinemaFEST is tonight, kicking off two weeks of great films indoors and out. In case you missed it, we named a few you won’t want to miss.

THURSDAY: Sounds Good
Insound is having their first ever warehouse sale at their office in Greenpoint, and they’re promising great deals on new and classic vinyl, bargain bins full of rare CDs, and deals on silk-screened t-shirts and posters. Doors are open from 5-8pm and they’ll have keg-based refreshments for the thirsty crowd.

Hip-Hop in the Park
The fifth annual Brooklyn Hip-Hop Festival–a celebration of hip-hop music and culture–kicks off with a retrospective photo exhibit of its previous four years at Galapagos Art Space at 7pm (get advance tickets). Two days later, the festival itself–featuring such legends as DJ Premier and Grand Puba–takes over the Empire Fulton Ferry State Park in Dumbo at noon, followed by an after-party at Southpaw at 9pm.

FRIDAY: Blurry Line
The Klaus von Nichtssagend Gallery is holding an opening reception for Jonah Koppel’s Modern Art show this Friday from 7-9pm. The gallery will show off Koppel’s eight-foot pattern-based paintings, each of which blurs the line between the fabric he paints on and the synthetic dots, lines and colors that make up his work.

Bath Party
Enjoy the health benefits of steam rooms, sauna, and massages or indulge in the hookah lounge or homemade vodka infusions at the epic Gemini & Scorpio Russian Baths dance party in Kensington this Friday. It’s the only one this summer, so get tix while they last!

SATURDAY: Hot and Salty
With a City proposal on the table to crowd Coney Island with high rises, this weekend’s Mermaid Parade is sure to be the most politicized yet. Watching the scantily clad women waving from floats on Surf Ave. is also the quintessential way to kick start your summer in the city. Afterward, lace up your skates at Dreamland Roller Rink, the official after party.

A Different Kind of Street Meat
The Greenhorns are hosting a festival and fundraiser in Carroll Gardens at the Old Pharmacy on Henry Street at Sackett. Look for the bicycle-powered spit roasting a goat for goat sandwiches, local beer, ice cream and a performance by Reverend Billy’s gospel choir. RSVP here, or just show up and get goaty. 513 Henry St., 2-9pm.

Beer Sounds
Already ones to host their fair share of monthly cultural happenings, Union Hall brings a new event into the mix: Vinyl Tap, a rare-beer tasting/used-record flea combo. The free event, which also features grilled-on-site burgers and dogs, starts at 2pm.

Jiggler Winners
Entries are closed, but you can still come check out the competition for the First Annual Jell-O Mold Competition at Gowanus Studio Space from 6-10pm on Saturday. In addition to Kelso Beer, they’re serving Jell-O shots, of course, while attempting to make the Jell-o mold cool again.

Wizard Rock
The Harry Potter series has inspired any number of fanatical acts from young readers (see: the millions of kids who stood in line, in full costume, to buy the last book the very second it hit stores). But perhaps none is as endearing as that of brothers Joe and Paul DeGeorge, who, in 2002, at ages 15 and 23, respectively, formed the band Harry and the Potters to write and play songs inspired solely by the J.K. Rowling oeuvre. (Sample song titles include “Voldemort Can’t Stop the Rock” and “Save Ginny Weasley.”) Seven years later, the boys bring their lo-fi Potter rock to the Bell House, with like-minded bands the Remus Lupins and the Whomping Willows as openers. The all-ages show starts at the kiddie-friendly time of 5pm.

SUNDAY: Heavenly Fair
Park Slope celebrates Father’s Day with its annual Seventh Heaven Street Fair, which takes over 7th Avenue from Flatbush to 15th Street, from 11am-6pm.

Hot Dawg
Billed as an after-party to the Make Music New York festival, the Williamsburgers and Wieners block party is Sunday at 4pm at Cyn Lounge. Somewhere between the ‘burgers and the dogs, musicians including Daniel Harris, Alan Cohen Experience, and Avi Wisnia will take the stage in the garden patio. Food is $1, with drink specials all day long.

Walk for the Hell of It
Doing anything this Sunday? How about a 40-mile, two-state, four (or more) borough walk from Brooklyn to Staten Island by way of Jersey? We’re skeptical too, but we admire what Matt Hackett is proposing — to get people “to slow down their lives for one day and take a serious look at their cit(ies).” It’s the first of his organized yet unguided walks under the non-profit org, Flashwalk, which has all the deets on where to meet (7am, Grand Army Plaza!) and how he came up with this great, kooky idea.

Jazz Solo
Ben Monder has played with everyone, barely moves as he plays impossible guitar melodies, and has a 16 minute song titled Hatchet Face. What’s not to love? See him Sunday at the Solo Kitchen Bar–so say our friends at searchandrestore.com.

TUESDAY: Yoga Greene
If the weather cooperates, meet for free yoga classes in Ft. Greene Park each Tuesday at 7pm throughout the summer.

Eat for a Cause
St. John’s Bread & Life fights hunger in Brooklyn, and on June 24 they’re holding a Rush Hour Benefit for Hunger at Grand Central Station. Sips, snacks, silent auction and good feelings. Advance tix and info here.
