Tip Sheet: Jun. 24-Jun. 30

WEDNESDAY: RE/ART
The North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition is a small group of artists and administrators set on beautifying North Brooklyn through public art. Their upcoming benefit, RE/PAINT RE/BUILD, will feature drinks, food by Chef Michael Sullivan (of Greenpoint restaurant Anella in the former Queen’s Hideaway space), haircuts (seriously!), and portraits of found objects to raise money for their first project, the India Street Mural Project. Tickets are $20. The event is at Gallery 1889 in Greenpoint from 7-11pm.
FRIDAY/WEEKEND: Summer’s Stage
Two of Celebrate Brooklyn’s bigger-name rock acts grace its stage at the Prospect Park Bandshell this weekend, starting with the ethereal dream-pop of New York’s own Blonde Redhead tonight. Following these indie veterans on Saturday are newer sensations Dr. Dog, whose lo-fi sound ranges from a 2007 cover of Architecture in Helsinki’s “Heart It Races” to their Band-esque single “Hang On.” Both shows are free and start at 7:30pm. We’ve got a pair of reserved tickets to give away for the Blonde Redhead show — so you can show up late and still get great seats! — and we’re giving them to the next person who sends us a great story idea for a future BB email! (Yes, this is totally subjective. Check the site first to see if they’ve been claimed before emailing us.) Thanks for trying — we got two great ideas already!
Unleashed
Unleash:Brooklyn is a new dog (and cat!) daycare facility in Greenpoint, and since they’re in need of volunteers to walk their rescued pets, the team will be manning (dogging?) their own booth during this Saturday’s Williamsburg Walks. Stop by and yelp out! Head to their new space at 216 Franklin St. on Friday night for drinks (proceeds go to the nonprofit Dog Habitat, which works to provide shelter for rescued animals) and doggie playtime from 7-10pm.
Such a Zine
The former Public Bath #7 becomes NYC Zine Fest #1 this weekend when the independent publishers, distributors and supporters of zines come together at the Brooklyn Lyceum to celebrate their self-published, homemade DIY publications. The Zine Fest opens both Saturday and Sunday at noon and continues until 7pm both nights. Free!
SATURDAY: Cinema Al Fresco
Gear up for summer outdoor movies with the food documentary What’s on Your Plate? this Saturday in Ft. Greene Park, presented as part of BAMcinemaFEST. It’s free, and live music opens the night at 6pm.

SUNDAY: The UnFancy Way or the Highway
Join BB editor Annaliese Griffin and Brooklyn’s most famous butcher, Tom Mylan at the third annual UnFancy Food Show (UFFS founder Sasha Davies, who sadly won’t be able to attend this year is pictured above). The day promises less rain and more producers than last year, including a book signing by author Julie Powell (proceeds from book sales will go to Just Food); a special Pride Bar from newcomer Liddabit Sweets ($1 per bar donated to Empire State Pride Agenda); cheese from UnFancy favorite, Jasper Hill Farm; and of course, beer specials. The Green Pirate Juice truck will also be on the scene for anyone who would rather hydrate than intoxicate. The UnFancy Food Show, noon to 6pm, East River Bar, 97 S. 6th St., Williamsburg. $5.
MONDAY: Hey Stoopid
Kimber VanRy, the Prospect Heights man who publicly fought his $25 summons for drinking a beer on his stoop, is telling his “Stoop-id Tale” this Monday at Pete’s Candy Store at 7:30pm. It’s part of Open City Dialogue, a bi-monthly lecture series focused on the obsessions of New Yorkers of all walks of life.

TUESDAY: Listen Up
The Bell House celebrates the release of Wilco’s new album–titled, simply, Wilco–with a free listening party. The event, which starts at 7:30pm, will feature drink specials, complimentary food, and albums on hand for sale.
Star Stand-up
Although Janeane Garofalo may be better known these days as an actress, activist, and Air America personality, she has been performing stand-up since her undergraduate days, sharing her perspectives on everything from politics to the personal. She shares the stage at Union Hall with Marc Maron, whose angry, angsty act has garnered him comparisons to Woody Allen and George Carlin. The evening begins at 7:30pm; get tickets.
