Tip Sheet: May 21-27
Everybody Dance Now
In a nod to the Brooklyn Bridge’s 125th anniversary, Chuck Davis, artistic director of DanceAfrica — BAM’s famous festival of African and African-American dance, music, art and film — has curated a program that celebrates building bridges between cultures… and in that gracious spirit, BAM is extending a pair of free tickets to one lucky BB reader for the opening night performance this Friday, May 23, featuring the American premiere of Gambia’s Ceesay Kujabi and the Bachinab dance troupe, along with percussionists and dancers from Atlanta (pictured), Bed-Stuy, and Harlem’s own LaRocque Bey School of Dance Theatre. To win, just hit reply and tell us the historical significance of the LaRocque Bey School.
Also on the bill are highlights from the African Film Festival, a free screening of Ken Burn’s Brooklyn Bridge, and 250 vendors from Nigeria to Chicago selling artifacts, crafts, jewelry and food outdoors at the DanceAfrica Bazaar, Saturday through Monday.
In BAMcafe, two Hatian DJs, house pioneer Richard “Earthman” Laurent and Hard Hittn Harry, who toured with the Fugees, will combine their turntablism with the congos, violins, vocals and guitars of a live afro-beat ensemble on Saturday night. Details for all these Memorial Day weekend festivities are at bam.org.
Another house legend, Roy Davis Jr., will inaugurate The Yard’s daylong get downs alongside the Gowanus Canal, where they’ll host outdoor dance parties every Sunday throughout the summer (3-9 pm; $8 with RSVP at sundaybestnyc.com). 400 Carroll St between Bond and Nevins, theyard.ws
125 Years Young
The Brooklyn Bridge’s birthday bash begins tomorrow, with every kind of fanfare imaginable. Our personal favorite is the Telectroscope, the so-called “tunnel” to London that will allow Brooklynites to see Londoners and vice versa through June 15. If you come up with a good enough reason (say, a marriage proposal or a dance off) the organizers will let you skip to the front of the line on select days to get a glimpse of someone across the pond. Just email your special request to telectroscope@artichoke.uk.com.
G Maka Me Crazy
Assemblymember Hakeem Jeffries has called for a 6:30 pm rally tonight, May 21, at the Lafayette Avenue Presbyterian Church, for improvements to G Train service and connections before the MTA votes on its fate in June. Details on Gowanus Lounge.
Ophelia, Fair and Free
Previews of “Hamlet,” the first play of this summer’s Shakespeare in the Park season, begin on Tuesday, May 27 and this year, you don’t need to stand on line for free tickets. When you register at the Public Theater website (publictheater.org) and request a pair of tickets the day of, they randomly select and announce the winners at 1 pm. It’s worth a shot to see Lauren Ambrose as Ophelia and Michael Stuhlbarg — the mentally deficient brother in Martin McDonagh’s amazing, jet-black comedy, “The Pillowman” — as Hamlet.
Other Tickets You’ll Want to Snag
Devo with the Tom Tom Club at McCarren Park Pool, onsale through Ticketmaster. Looks like Wilco is already sold out.
