Tip Sheet: May 6-May 12

WEDNESDAY: Gardener’s Delight
Planning to plant a garden this spring? Do some one-stop shopping at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s annual plant sale, where you can buy indoor plants, outdoor plants, annuals, perennials, vegetable plants, and just about any other kind of greenery you might want. The sale runs Wednesday through Thursday, starting at 9am both days; Wednesday will feature a number of free events on plant selection and care.

Brooklyn Film Buffs
Half Neslon directors Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden, Oscar-nominated Trouble the Water director Tia Lessin and more local filmmakers speak tonight at Galapagos‘ Living the Independent Dream Brooklyn Filmmakers Panel, moderated by Mark Rosenberg of Rooftop Films.

Photo Phenoms
If you haven’t marveled at famed photographer Martin Schoeller’s book Female Body Builders yet, you are doing yourself a disservice. Before picking it up, stop by Dumbo on Thursday night to see his portraits of the Piraha tribe in the rain forest of Brazil, plus the work of six other accomplished photographers during the debut of Personal at Randall Scott Gallery.

THURSDAY: Have Blog, Will Party
The annual Brooklyn Blogfest returns for its fourth installment with new reads like Eat It and pioneers like Louise Crawford of Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn, who’s put a face on nearly every blog in Brooklyn by organizing this event. This year brings panel discussions with Gothamist’s Jake Dobkin and Sustainable Flatbush’s Anne Pope, and mom bloggers like A Child Grows in Brooklyn together for like-minded talks. The festivities begin at 7 at powerHouse Arena in Dumbo. Admission is $10, $5 for students and seniors, and includes an after party at Galapagos.

Boozin’ With Bach
What red-blooded American doesn’t love kickin’ back with a Brooklyn Lager and listening to a Mozart sonata? Eschew the normal indie rock show by hitting up Pete’s Candy Store on Thursday night for the bar’s new series Classical Candy, featuring some of New York’s most talented young classical musicians.

FRIDAY: Musical Memoir
Dean Wareham — former frontman of the beloved indie bands Galaxie 500 and Luna, and now half of the duo Dean & Britta — reads from his new memoir, Black Postcards, at 7pm at BookCourt.

8-Bit Bash
Sure, they incorporate a modified Nintendo system into their music, but Anamanaguchi is no gimmick. The NYC band (one of the L Magazine’s “8 Bands You Need to Hear”) plays frenetic electro-punk that will get you moving like you’re on a Power Pad. Check them out on Friday at Europa.

SATURDAY: Funny Lady
Roz Chast discusses her career as a cartoonist — most notably for The New Yorker — and shows some her favorite cartoons at 4pm at the Brooklyn Public Library.

SUNDAY: After the Mother’s Day Brunch
Brooklyn singer-songwriter Jason Reischel’s lastest group The Populists bring their mellow alt-country tunes to MonkeyTown this Sunday night. Nothing better to soothe away the stress of a big Mother’s Day brunch. Make reservations for your seats, since they’ve been selling out shows.

MONDAY: Hello, Cupcake
Brooklyn cookoffs are hot, but the hottest of them all is the Brooklyn Kitchen’s annual (this year’s the third) Cupcake Cookoff. Expect Union Pool to be packed with bakers and the Brooklynites who love them (and their baked goods). Show up at 7 to sample the treats. There’s a popular vote as always, but this year the entrants will have to buy their favor with a donation to the Greenpoint Soup Kitchen.

Art for Art’s Sake
Today is the last day to bid in BAM’s fifth annual silent auction. The sale of pieces from local artists, both well known and emerging, helps support all of BAM’s fantastic programming. The catalog includes sculpture, design, photography, painting and more. Browse and bid here.
