Tip Sheet: May 7 - May 14
Give Me Your Pour
Next Wed., May 14, Long Island winemakers bring their estate-grown vintages to Brooklyn for Edible Brooklyn’s second annual Brooklyn Uncorked, and we’ve got two free tickets for the first person who can name the East End winery owner whose sculpture is installed at Pratt. Stumped? Take this list of Long Island wineries to the sculpture garden this weekend and suss it out. Or buy your admittance to tastings of 30 local wines and 5 microbrews; cheese from Stinky Bklyn; and food from Palo Santo, Flatbush Farm, Smoke Joint, and more (brownpapertickets.com).
New Old Wave
DEVO fans get a chance to chat with Mark Mothersbaugh by video this Saturday at 3rd Ward, where 20 of his “Postcard Prints” will be on view along with the interactive work of DEVO-influenced artists, and an installation modeled after DEVO’s “Energy Dome” hats. The show, “The Super Thing: NYC Goes DEVO,” is up through June 1, but only at the opening are you invited to dress up DEVO-style. Details at 3rdward.com.
Openings
Root Stock and Quade, the Park Slope plant shop/garden design center, opens their Clinton Hill outpost today sometime next week at 471 Myrtle Ave. And the owners of Camaje, the West Village bistro that offers cooking classes and wine tastings, open their Prospect Heights wine bar and cafe, Abigail, on Friday. 718-399-3200; abigailbrooklyn.com
Blogade
The Third Annual Brooklyn Blogfest returns tomorrow night in grander digs (the Brooklyn Lyceum), with beer and grub (Maria’s Mexican Bistro, Brooklyn Fudge), made possible by bigger sponsors (outside.in), all in celebration of bloggers like Gowanus Lounge, New York Shitty, Bed-Stuy Blog, and organizer Only the Blog Knows Brooklyn. 8 pm, 227 Fourth Ave, brooklynlyceum.com
Time for the Pain
“Is it time for my painkiller?” is John Turturro’s comedic refrain in Endgame, now at BAM. Everyone wants to take the edge off these end times, even the audience — a testament to Beckett’s skill at bringing the interminable sense of dying to life. Despite the laughs, this is a dark, difficult play, but fans of the stellar cast — Max Casella is the servant Clov to Turturro’s Hamm, and Broadway stars Elaine Stritch and Alvin Epstein play Hamm’s parents (hilariously stuffed in garbage cans) — will be rewarded with their blazing performances. bam.org
Celluloid Chameleon
At BAMcinematek, Ed Lachman, the cinematographer responsible for Sofia Coppola’s atmospheric The Virgin Suicides; Todd Hayne’s Technicolor Far From Heaven and his experimental Dylan biopic I’m Not There; David Byrne’s True Stories, and Susan Seidelman’s 80s paean Desperately Seeking Susan, is getting a two-week survey of his varied career, beginning with his directorial debut, Ken Park, this Friday. Larry Clark, David Byrne, Paul Schrader and Lachman himself will speak after select screenings. bam.org
