Tip Sheet: Nov. 18-Nov. 24

WEDNESDAY: Bay Meets BK
West Coast print mag Meatpaper and the local Diner Journal joined up for tonight’s cocktail party, East Meats West, with folks from Chez Panisse, Bar Tartine, and Marlow and Sons. Tonight at Enid’s, this bi-costal group will serve up food and drinks from the best of both worlds from 8-11.

THURSDAY: The Sacred and the Profane
For years BB friend and Heeb arts editor Shana Liebman has curated the hilarious Heeb storytelling series, where all walks of artistic folk–F-Bomb queen Susie Essman, Brooklyn son Jonathan Ames, comedian/actor Michael Showalter–have kvetched on stage about things familiar to the tribe (you know, summer camp, crazy mothers, and male strippers). The highlights of the series are now collected in the new anthology Sex, Drugs and Gefilte Fish, which she and other Brooklyn contributors read from tonight from 7-9pm at Dumbo’s powerHouse Arena.

Between the Lines
Found Objects is the theme of tonight’s Between the Lines, a joint series between BAM and literary journal A Public Space. It features architects, filmmakers and writers exploring how particular places impact us, and we have a pair of tickets to give away to a random subscriber who emails us with the subject “lost and found.”

FRIDAY: Popping Party
Every once in a while, the prospect of yet another night drinking PBR and spotting minor indie celebs at local watering holes spurs an existential crisis. Is that all there is? Williamsburg’s HiChristina! is here to redefine nightlife–as what exactly, we’re not entirely sure, but it looks fun. Tonight’s party is bubble-themed: encase yourself in bubble wrap, blow bubbles, roll around in a giant bubble, play fill-in-the-word-bubble. You can even bring your own bottle of cheap bubbly to commemorate the occasion; the event is BYOB!

Sweater Time
As a follow up to last year’s bike and hoodie movies, Cafe Grumpy has another clever movie series this November: Roastier and Toastier: Sweater Movies. The films are projected next to their new coffee roaster (the only fully functional on-site roaster locally) at 7:30pm on Fridays. This week catch “The Ice Storm” and next Friday, “Christmas Vacation.”

WEEKEND LONG: Artmobile
You’ve been meaning to check out the galleries in Bushwick, but the thought of taking the G to the L on the weekend is too daunting. Enter the smART Brooklyn Gallery Hop, a free, weekend-long bus tour of Brooklyn’s many arts districts, sponsored by the Boro Prez. Included stops on the weekend’s four “loops” (you need to RSVP for the one you want) are some of our favorite art spaces like English Kills, Open Source, and Proteus Gowanus. Sunday’s “Tour of Four” includes stops in far afield spots like Bay Ridge, and there’s a kid-friendly artmarking event at the Rotunda Gallery. Check out participating galleries and save a seat here.

Thanksgiving Prep
Whether you’re a cook from scratch type or a heat stuff up type, you’ll find lots to work with this weekend in Greenpoint. Saturday’s Greenpoint Food Market has jam, pies, bread, and a long list of local food vendors (and a chicken liver pate demo at 2pm). Sunday, head to the roof for a farmer’s market with a view at Rooftop Farms. They’re partnering with the upstate Liberty View Farms, so there will be organic apples among the produce. Greenpoint Food Market, 129 Russell Street, noon-5pm; Rooftop Farms, 44 Eagle Street, 10am-5pm.

THROUGH SATURDAY: Celestial Singing
At first glance, Johannes Kepler, the bearded 16th-17th century discoverer of laws of planetary motion, doesn’t seem like a likely opera lead. Thankfully, Philip Glass thought otherwise. The US debut of Kepler, the Minimalist composer’s newest opera (sung in German), will be presented in a concert staging at BAM this week. Expect man vs. God, scientific revelation, and feeling really smart by the end.

SUNDAY: Pies, Oh My!
Who says that state fairs should get to have all the fun? The first annual Brooklyn Pie Bake-Off Benefit brings blue-ribbon pies to our borough. Sweet and savory pies will be judged by locals, including BB’s own Chrysanthe (on the other side of the cookoff table for the first time!), while attendees get two slices of pie, free drinks, and ice cream for that crucial a la mode factor. Aspiring bakers have until Thursday to email brooklynpiebake@gmail.com with their entry (and ingredient list); the only two requirements are homemade crusts and the use of one local ingredient. And all this deliciousness goes to a good cause; a portion of the proceeds will be going to Bags for the People, the local non-profit that combats plastic bag waste by giving away reusable bags.

18th Century Surprise
Surprise your Thanksgiving guests with some historical cuisine this year. Head to Park Slope’s Old Stone House for a cooking demonstration by Sarah Lohman on how to cook up a Revolutionary-era feast from noon-3pm.

Hip-Hop Heroes
Brooklyn Bowl breaks out of its usual scruffy indie lineups with what looks to be a pretty incredible hip-hop show. Brooklyn’s own Talib Kweli will be opening minds with thoughtful lyrics and bangin’ beats, while labelmate Jean Grae will get the crowd going with fantastically clever songs and an attitude to match. Associates SkyZoo, Beatnick, and K-Salaam will ensure no beats get dropped anywhere they shouldn’t be.
