Tip Sheet: Nov. 4-Nov. 10

WEDNESDAY: Film for Oil
Wang Bing’s monster documentaries about industrial Chinese life–think hours of coal mines, belching factories, and broken families–gets even more epic today, when Sunset Park’s Light Industry screens the 14-hour-long Crude Oil, about a workday on a Chinese oil field. The screenings, daily from 9am-11pm through Sunday in partnership with Triple Canopy, are accompanied by other Bing films and talks and “landscans” from the researchers/artists at Center for Land Use Interpretation.
THURSDAY: Reader Reading
Brooklyn Writers Space, which provides shared writing space in Park Slope to both new and established authors, is throwing a book launch party at BookCourt for The Reader, an anthology of novel excerpts, plays, and screenplays penned by BWS members. The free evening begins at 7pm.
Thursday Night Throwdown
Party hard at this week’s My Open Bar event at Public Assembly. Superfun party-throwers Bikes in the Kitchen will be teaming up tonight with the Radical Outing Crew to ensure a crazy good time. Acts like Radical Outing’s Anton Glamb and Strictly Business will be rocking the mic while DJs Teenwolf, Roofeeo, Dirtyfinger and C. Lo will keep the dance party going until all hours of the night–aided, of course, by a 9-10pm Colt 45 open bar.
SATURDAY: Multiverse Mashup
Sick of the same old warehouse parties and late-night gigs? Unsurprisingly, 3rd Ward is the place to go for a night so big it spans the multiverse. Saturday, Paper Garden Records presents Multiverse Playground, a night full of music, art, comedy, and general artistic craziness at the East Williamsburg space. Paper Garden’s own emerging artists, like Emanuel and the Fear, Darla Farmer, and Peasant, will perform alongside a special performance by the so-hot-right-now funny-rap duo Das Racist; as far as the visual culture goes, Larry Mayorga’s art/light installation will be sharing space with Heidi Greenwood’s photography exhibition and a live conceptual art performance by Art Battles. As if that weren’t fun enough, Comedy Central’s Kurt Metzger will be yukking it up between sets and free download samplers will be given out to early arrivals.
Foxy Shop
Foxy & Winston is opening a shop at 392 Van Brunt Street with a fete this Saturday from 6-9pm. Sip drinks and nibble cupcakes from Baked while browsing their screenprints, notecards, and children’s clothing. They will soon sell Foxy & Winston printed fabric by the yard and make custom letterpress invites and cards. The first 100 people through the door get a party favor!
Night at the Museum
Live music has always been a big component of the Brooklyn Museum’s Target First Saturday, but its inclusion is particularly apt this month, as the evening centers around the museum’s new exhibition Who Shot Rock & Roll: A Photographic History, 1955 to the Present. Performing at the free extravaganza, between 5pm and 8:15pm, are Grass Widow (lo-fi indie), the Beets (garage rock), and Brooklyn’s own Crystal Stilts (psychobilly surf punk). Then at 9pm, DJ Evil Dee kicks off the First Saturday dance party, spinning sounds inspired by the exhibit’s featured artists. The night also offers talks on the photography on display, including panels with the exhibit’s curator, Gail Buckland, and two of its photographers, Bob Gruen and Justin Borucki.
Sufjan Celebration
The works of Sufjan Stevens provide the focus for tonight’s early show at the Bell House. The Osso string quartet, who’ve collaborated with everyone from the New Pornographers to Jay-Z, open the evening with their interpretation of Stevens’ 2002 instrumental album Know Your Rabbit. Their performance will be followed by a screening of The BQE, the singer’s 2007 cinematic musing on the expressway of the same name, originally commissioned by BAM for its Next Wave Festival. The show starts at 7:30pm. Get tickets.

SUNDAY: Competitive Chili
Warm up a chilly November night with Sunday’s 5th Annual BRUCE (or Brooklyn Underground Chili Extravaganza) Chili Cookoff at Barcade. Ten competitors, including the 2008 champion, cook up their best chili for the delectation of all attendees. Think your palate is refined enough to judge? Turn up before 8 to win a chance to be one of the ten decision makers. To wash it all down, drink specials by SlyFox and Sixpoint will also be on offer.
Red Blooded Fun
Carnivores wishing they could step inside Joseph Mitchell’s New York will get their chance this Sunday at the Brooklyn Beefsteak. Well, some of them. The utensil-free, all-you-can-eat-and-drink afternoon of beef tenderloin and McSorley’s Ale is sold out, but more tickets may be released this week.
BETAmax
25+ free group exhibitions, 18 locations, all close enough to see in a day. That’s what Bushwick’s BETA Spaces promises this Sunday, along with highlights like a panel discussion on public art at Lumenhouse, a screening at 3rd Ward’s Moviehouse, and an after party at Page Not Found (nice name). BETA Space’s blog has the full schedule.
All Hail the King (Con)
This Saturday and Sunday, Brooklyn Lyceum hosts King Con, the first comic and animation convention ever held in our borough. Along with appearances by comic luminaries like Harvey Pekar (American Splendor), Al Jaffee (Mad magazine), and Jonathan Ames (HBO’s Bored to Death), the convention will offer panels, workshops, and even an LolCat captioning contest courtesy of Icanhascheezburger.com. Get tickets.
TUESDAY: Ten Years of Tomes
Spoonbill & Sugartown has always been one of our top Williamsburg booksellers–it’s hard to believe that they’ve been around for a decade! Tuesday (10/10), help them celebrate the big 1-0. At 10am they’re requesting that all their fans take ten moments to think about a book they’ve read in the last ten years; at the same time, the Spoonbillian Furies will be performing outside the store. Other events are sure to be announced closer to the day, so check their website or stop by on the day for more details.
