Tip Sheet: Oct. 29-Nov. 3
THURSDAY: O’Death

Could there be a better named band playing the night before Halloween than O’Death? We don’t have tickets to see these banjo-totin’, whisky-swillin’ Appalachian-carnie punks at the Music Hall of Williamsburg, but we have a copy of their new album, “Broken Hymns, Limbs and Skin,” to give away. Just tell us what their namesake refers to here>>The album’s gone (their name refers to a traditional Appalachian folk song), but you can hear it streaming in its entirety on Spinner, read an interview with frontman Greg Jamie, and see them live Thursday night!
FRIDAY: Bunny Suits Welcome

We’ll be adding Halloween events on our Twitter and Facebook pages throughout the week… but if you miss the free, 7pm screening of “Donnie Darko” Halloween night at Cafe Grumpy, we will begin to doubt your commitment to Sparkle Motion. site>>
Thanks to Yelp for sponsoring today’s Tip Sheet and spreading the word on strange events like The Gravesend Inn, which is neither in Gravesend, nor an inn. Hmmm…
SATURDAY: Art and Readings on the Cheap

In conjunction with their current exhibit on British artists Gilbert and George, the Brooklyn Museum is devoting this month’s free First Saturday to all things Brit. The evening, entitled “London Calling,” includes a dance party of northern soul, British indie, new wave and Brit-pop hits. site>>
Newly knighted MIT professor and 2008 Pulitzer Prize-winner Junot Diaz reads from his astonishing, idiosyncratic debut novel “The Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao” at the Brooklyn Public Library at 4pm, followed by a discussion with WNYC’s Leonard Lopate. Knowing the Brooklyn literati, it will be mobbed, so arrive early. site>>
Spruce up your apartment by checking out Prints Gone Wild at Supreme Trading, where small presses from across the country will be selling prints for no more than $50 all weekend long. site>>
SUNDAY: Runner’s World

The New York City marathon is winding its way through our borough once again, with most of the mileage along 4th Ave. (click “Official Handbook Map” for the most detailed map, here). The race organizers have some good viewing-opp suggestions, but we’d like to add a few of our own: If you like to spectate with musical accompaniment, head to 10th St., where KTU will be broadcasting race-worthy tunes. (site>>) Prefer a BBQ? Pacific Standard, opening at 9:30am, is setting one up outside of its bar. (site>>) Beer and dogs not your morning fare? Then head to Sheep Station, which is showing the race on its big screen during brunch, just in case your live view is obscured. (site>>)
MONDAY: Don’t Sweat the Short Stories
The not-for-profit storytelling org The Moth hosts its first Brooklyn StorySLAM ever, at 8pm at Union Hall. Yarn-spinners with a tale related to sweat — the night’s theme — should sign up at 7:30pm; 10 entrants will be selected at random to recite their story onstage. site>>
On the Storefront
If you’re looking for us, we’ll be hanging out at Franny and Roey reading magazines and listening to records. The new boutique at 252 Grand Street in Williamsburg one-ups all the other cutesy shops around — maybe because it feels just like your best friend’s bedroom (if her mom decorated it in mid-70s fabric store finds). site>>
